The Chureca is changing rapidly. With the financial support of the Spanish government, the city of Managua is building a recycling plant as well as a new housing complex next to the dump for the 220 families living inside the Chureca. A lot of Churequeros have been hired by the companies in charge of those projects.
For those remaining, life seems to be getting harder by the day. The 1500 Churequeros accuse the municipal workers to collect the recycling material they can sell before the garbage trucks get to the Chureca. They have to survive on a few dollars a day. They often scavenge the rotting food from the supermarkets and restaurants of Managua, that is dumped daily in the 5-mile landfill.
